Uncertain Landscapes
Beyond transdisciplinary approaches
Our position towards the built environment cannot be limited to being a mere observer. We are part of it and that old dominant or complacent perspective has radically changed: proximity has replaced distance, uncertainty has weakened any framework, and complexity has destroyed harmony. This congress aims to address Uncertain Landscapes as a conceptual tool to rethink our way of being in the world, break disciplinary boundaries and seek new positions in the present, from the past and towards a more permeable future.
BACKGROUND
As part of the activities of the Lab2PT, Laboratory for Landscapes, Heritage and Territory and the IN2PAST, Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, four workshops were organized to discuss transversal perspectives and new approaches to Landscape and its multiple applications, between December 2021 and July 2022.
Crossing different analysis, practices and methodologies, these workshops were conceived to stand as an opportunity to critically reflect upon the problematization axes that served as the basis for the present International Congress, which, in turn, aims to mobilize the scientific community towards an innovative discussion on Landscape.
The workshops brought together researchers, and promoted the direct participation of both internal and external audiences in Lab2PT and IN2PAST, in addition to being an open exercise in constructing knowledge that allowed the creation of new content and open-ended questions. This format facilitated dialogue and generated an experimental condition associated with a transdisciplinary approach that intended to enhance the emergence of new fields of reference and unexpected intersections.
The first workshop under the title of ROTATIONS, held in December 2021, aimed to find points of contact or turning points existing between the different subjects that deal with the concept of Landscape at the research centres integrated in the IN2PAST. The second and third workshops, entitled TRANSFORMATIONS AND DISPLACEMENTS, held in April 2022, opened a wider discussion amongst external guests who shared their work on the materiality and construction of the landscape on the one hand, and the mobility of human activities and their cultural expressions on the other. Finally, in a fourth workshop entitled POLICIES, held in July 2022, the current management of Landscape was discussed, alongside the necessary variances for the new climatic and social emergencies.
Each workshop structured a set of presentations in an environment that was prone to a systematic and intensive dialogue with the public, one that removed any non-pre-established evidence. The moderators questioned participants coming from different disciplinary areas and attempted to establish common ground. For their part, the speakers collected and synthesized the topics addressed and reinforced the critical mapping of the circulation flow of debates, including any conflicts and contradictions that arose.
We would like to thank all the participants of these workshops, who generously shared their knowledge and thus, contributed to improve the debate around Landscape.
